Suspect Arrested in Killing of Spanish Student in Mexico

Mexican security officials say they have arrested the man suspected of killing Claudia Tacoronte Aguilera, a young Spanish woman who was murdered in the city of Cuautla, in the central state of Morelos. The announcement came from Omar García Harfuch, head of Mexico’s Secretariat of Security and Civilian Protection, who confirmed the capture followed a coordinated operation involving several federal and state agencies.

While García Harfuch did not publicly name the suspect, local reports identified him as Francisco Javier Meléndez, known by the alias “El Trompas,” a man previously linked to theft in the area.

The killing sent shockwaves through the local community and beyond: three Spanish exchange students from the University of Granada, who had been staying in Morelos, canceled their trip after learning of the crime. García Harfuch expressed condolences to the victim’s family on social media, noting that as soon as authorities learned of the case, forces from the Defense Secretariat, the Navy, the federal Attorney General’s Office, the National Guard and state prosecutors in Morelos launched a joint investigation.

The official said preventing gender-based killings, known in Mexico as feminicidios, remains a top priority for President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration. “When we fail to prevent a woman from becoming a victim of this violence, our duty is to clarify the facts, arrest those responsible, and fight impunity with the full force of the state,” García Harfuch said.
