Mexican soccer’s biggest rivalry, the Clásico Nacional, carries extra weight this time around. Club América is chasing a milestone that has proven surprisingly hard to reach: its 100th career win over Chivas de Guadalajara.
The Eagles have been stuck on the doorstep of that number since last September, and Chivas has repeatedly spoiled the party. A painful 2-1 loss in September was followed by a lackluster 1-1 draw in an October friendly. Then, on February 14, América appeared poised to finally seal the milestone, only for Chivas to play the spoiler again, winning 1-0 on home turf and putting the celebration on ice.
Guadalajara, for its part, has no intention of serving as a stepping stone toward América’s historic victory. With 82 wins of its own in the all-time series, the Guadalajara-based club is working to close the gap and chase a milestone century of its own.
Adding to the drama, this clash arrives at a pivotal point in the season, with both teams separated by only a slim margin in the standings — raising the stakes even further for a rivalry that already brings Mexican soccer to a standstill every time these two teams meet.
