Mexico’s biggest rivalry returns to the spotlight this Saturday, September 19, when Club América hosts Chivas de Guadalajara at Estadio Banorte, formerly known as Estadio Azteca. More than 88,000 spectators are expected to fill the stands for the first fully sold-out match at the venue since it hosted World Cup games earlier this year.
To mark the occasion, organizers are asking fans to bring yellow hats, paying tribute to a memorable scene from the tournament’s opening match. Back on June 11, before Mexico faced South Africa in the World Cup’s kickoff game, thousands of supporters tossed green hats onto the pitch in a cascading wave that became one of the most talked-about moments of the entire competition.
This weekend, fans will recreate that spectacle with hats in yellow and blue — colors chosen to reflect América’s identity — featuring the club’s crest, the Liga MX logo, and other commemorative details linking the moment back to the World Cup celebration. Estadio Banorte, which has hosted World Cup matches three times over its history, is expected to be packed to capacity for the occasion, giving fans a chance to relive the excitement of this year’s tournament before turning their attention to Mexican soccer’s most storied derby.
