Mexican winger Mateo Chávez is having a breakout season with AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands’ top division, the Eredivisie. The Chivas academy product has become a regular starter, racking up goals and assists while also making his debut in the Europa League, Europe’s second-tier club competition.
That consistent form abroad has now paid off at the international level. Rafa Márquez, in his first squad announcement as head coach of Mexico’s national team, included Chávez for a series of exhibition matches against Colombia, Peru, the United States, and Chile.
Speaking to ClaroSports, Chávez said the call-up filled him with excitement and described it as a jolt of motivation. “I genuinely enjoy representing the national team. It’s like a recharge of energy,” he said, adding that the timing coincides with a period of both personal and collective growth.
The 21-year-old credited his time playing in Europe with helping him mature as a player and stay sharp for whenever Mexico calls on him. He also expressed enthusiasm about Márquez’s vision for the team, saying he hopes to contribute, compete for a starting spot, and give his best effort during the upcoming friendlies.
