Mexican meteorologists are tracking a new weather system in the Pacific Ocean that is expected to organize into Tropical Storm Polo this Monday. According to forecasts cited by the outlet Informador.mx, the storm could intensify quickly over the following days, potentially reaching the strength of a Category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale.
A Category 3 hurricane is classified as a “major” storm, capable of producing sustained winds between 178 and 208 kilometers per hour (111 to 129 mph) and causing significant structural damage, power outages, and dangerous storm surge along coastal areas.
Authorities are urging residents in the Pacific coastal states of Mexico likely to be in the storm’s path to stay alert to official updates from Mexico’s National Water Commission (Conagua) and civil protection agencies. Heavy rains, strong winds, and rough seas are anticipated as Polo develops and moves through the region in the coming days.
Mexico’s Pacific coast frequently experiences tropical storms and hurricanes during the June-to-November hurricane season, and local governments typically issue evacuation advisories and open shelters when major storms are forecast to make landfall or pass near populated areas.
