Aeroméxico Denies Bank Data Was Leaked Despite Breach

Mexican carrier Aeroméxico has acknowledged that some of its customers’ personal information was exposed in a data breach, but the airline is pushing back against reports that sensitive financial details were compromised.

According to a statement reported by Reforma, a database containing passenger information began circulating for sale through the messaging app Telegram, prompting concern among travelers and triggering an investigation by Mexican authorities. Telegram, similar to WhatsApp but known for looser moderation, is frequently used by hackers to advertise stolen data.

While Aeroméxico admitted that a leak did occur, the company was firm in stating that the compromised records do not include banking information or credit card numbers belonging to its users. The airline did not specify exactly what categories of personal data were included in the breach, such as names, contact information, or travel history.

The incident is now under review by Mexico’s data protection authority, which is looking into how the breach occurred and whether the airline met its obligations to safeguard customer information. This case adds to a growing list of cybersecurity incidents affecting major companies across Latin America, where data breaches have increasingly targeted the travel and airline industry.
