Mexico’s measles outbreak continues to grow, with health officials reporting 19,620 confirmed cases and 49 deaths as of September 22. The tally covers all infections and fatalities recorded since February of last year, when authorities first declared the outbreak. Strikingly, the majority of cases—13,006—have been confirmed just this year, suggesting the virus is spreading faster than before.
The western state of Jalisco has borne the brunt of the outbreak, logging 6,883 cases, the highest of any region. Mexico City follows with 1,033 patients, while the southern state of Chiapas ranks third with 879 infections. Durango and Sonora round out the top five, with 645 and 394 cases respectively. According to health authorities, all 32 of Mexico’s states have reported measles cases since 2025, spread across 516 municipalities nationwide.
The disease has proven fatal in a dozen states. Chihuahua, in northern Mexico, has recorded the most deaths by far—21—followed by Zacatecas with 7 and Jalisco with 5. Mexico City has also reported fatalities, though the full state-by-state breakdown was not detailed in available figures.
