Colombian President Abelardo De La Espriella has praised a military operation that killed a senior commander of the Segunda Marquetalia, one of the armed groups that split from the FARC after the 2016 peace accord and refused to lay down their weapons.
The slain commander, known by the alias “Robinson” Gutiérrez, served as the political and financial leader of the group’s Teófilo Forero column. According to the president, Gutiérrez was connected to the assassination of Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, a prominent lawmaker and presidential hopeful whose killing shocked the country.
“We are doing justice for Miguel Uribe,” De La Espriella said, framing the strike as a direct response to that crime. He also issued a pointed warning to Iván Márquez, the Segunda Marquetalia’s top leader and a former FARC negotiator, declaring, “We’re going after the head of the gang.”
The remarks came days after the president discussed security matters with his cabinet, and follow other recent enforcement actions, including the transfer of members of the Sierra Nevada’s Autodefensas paramilitary faction to prisons far from their traditional Caribbean coast strongholds — a move officials described as cutting ties between fighters and the regions where they hold influence.
