Colombian security forces have killed a longtime guerrilla commander accused of financing decades of violence, including the recent assassination of Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay. Miguel Orlando Guzmán González, known as ‘Robinson,’ died in a rural area of Tello, in the southern department of Huila, during a coordinated operation involving the army, police, and air force.
Authorities say Robinson served as the finance chief for the Teófilo Forero unit, one of the most violent factions to emerge from the former FARC guerrilla group. The unit is now part of the Estado Mayor Central, an armed dissident network operating under the banner of the so-called Segunda Marquetalia. Officials believe the group was working to establish a strategic corridor linking Huila, Caquetá, and Meta provinces, funded largely through extortion, kidnapping, and the recruitment of minors.
Robinson’s criminal record reportedly spans more than three decades, beginning with a deadly 1991 ambush on a police station that left six officers dead. Over the years, his unit was tied to some of Colombia’s most notorious crimes, including the 2000 killing of congressman Diego Turbay Cote, mass kidnappings in Neiva, and the dramatic 2002 hijacking that ended peace talks between the government and the FARC.
Investigators say Robinson later became a trusted lieutenant of guerrilla commander ‘El Paisa’ before taking over the group’s finances in 2024.
