Mexican newspaper La Jornada has reported the death of Serafín Núñez Ramos, a co-founder of the Partido de los Pobres (Party of the Poor) and a former comrade-in-arms of Lucio Cabañas, one of the most iconic figures of Mexico’s leftist armed movements in the 20th century.
The Party of the Poor was a rural guerrilla organization that emerged in the southern state of Guerrero in the late 1960s and early 1970s, during a turbulent period of Mexican history often referred to as the “Dirty War,” when the government cracked down harshly on dissidents, students, and armed insurgents. Cabañas, a schoolteacher turned rebel commander, became a symbol of resistance for many Mexicans who felt excluded from the country’s economic and political system, before he was killed by the army in 1974.
Núñez Ramos was among those who stood alongside Cabañas in building the movement, which sought land reform and social justice for Guerrero’s impoverished rural communities. Details about the exact circumstances and date of his passing were not immediately available.
