Colombian security forces killed a senior rebel commander known as “Robinson” during a joint military operation over the weekend, President Abelardo De La Espriella announced. The strike took place in the rural village of El Cadillo, in Tello, a municipality in the southern department of Huila, and involved the Army, National Police, and Air Force working together. Three other members of the same armed group were captured in the raid.
The man killed has been identified as Miguel Orlando Guzmán González, who used the alias “Robinson Gutiérrez.” He served as political and financial chief of the Teófilo Forero Castro unit, part of the “Segunda Marquetalia,” a dissident faction of the former FARC guerrilla that rejected Colombia’s 2016 peace accord and resumed armed activity under commanders who had once negotiated that deal.
According to President De La Espriella, preliminary intelligence links Robinson to the assassination of Senator and presidential hopeful Miguel Uribe Turbay, allegedly through his role managing financing and logistics for the plot. The president called the findings preliminary, saying verification efforts continue, while vowing to pursue the full truth behind the killing.
Authorities also tie Robinson to extortion schemes, threats against farmers, recruitment of minors, and violent acts against civilians and security forces across Huila and Caquetá dating back to 2021, when he was reportedly a trusted aide to another guerrilla commander known as “El Paisa.”
