Elton John brought his long goodbye to Mexico City this week, opening the first of two farewell shows at Estadio Banorte as part of his final touring run. The British singer took the stage at 8:15 p.m., sitting down at his trademark piano to launch into a set that included fan favorites such as “The One” and “Tiny Dancer,” both of which had the crowd singing along.
Rain fell over the stadium before doors opened, but it did little to dampen spirits. Outside the venue, fans showed up decked out in tributes to the star, many sporting his signature oversized, colorful glasses as a mark of affection. Despite the storm clouds, the atmosphere stayed festive as concertgoers waited to catch what for many will be a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see the artist live.
During the show, John paused to thank the Mexican audience directly, acknowledging the country’s longstanding support throughout his career. Photos from the night showed a packed stadium floor, though by the hour mark some sections had begun to thin out.
The concert is part of Elton John’s farewell tour, in which he has said goodbye to audiences around the world before stepping away from the stage for good. This Mexico City stop included a second date, giving even more fans the opportunity to send him off in style.
