Hurricane Polo Kills Two Children, Three Missing in Mexico

Hurricane Polo has left a trail of destruction along Mexico’s Pacific coast, killing at least two children and leaving three people missing in the state of Jalisco as the storm barrels toward Baja California Sur.

The bodies of two children, ages 3 and 12, were recovered in the community of La Cuesta, in the municipality of Talpa de Allende, after floodwaters swept away the home where a family of four had been sheltering. Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus said heavy rain triggered by the hurricane caused the house to be carried roughly half a mile (about 800 meters) downstream. State helicopters, including aircraft nicknamed Fénix and Black Hawk, joined ground crews from civil protection and fire departments in the search for the children’s parents.

Meanwhile, in the resort city of Puerto Vallarta, rescue teams using jet skis and drones are searching for a 24-year-old tourist from San Luis Potosí who went missing Saturday after entering the ocean despite a red warning flag banning swimming due to dangerous surf.

Saturday night’s torrential rain also triggered landslides along State Highway 555, which connects Talpa de Allende and Tomatlán. Authorities are also monitoring a new tropical depression forming off the coast, which could strengthen quickly and bring additional heavy rain, high surf, and strong winds to Jalisco’s coastline in the coming days.
