Prosecutors in the western Mexican state of Jalisco announced the arrest of a man identified only as Eduardo Isaac “N” — Mexican authorities often withhold suspects’ last names during ongoing investigations — in connection with the killing of Karla Pérez Jiménez, a 25-year-old medical intern.
According to the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), investigators from its specialized unit on femicide and violence against women, children and teenagers tracked down the suspect using surveillance footage, intelligence gathering and fieldwork. He is now in judicial custody while prosecutors build their case and determine formal charges.
Pérez, originally from Irapuato in the neighboring state of Guanajuato, had been completing her medical internship at a hospital in Zapopan, part of the greater Guadalajara metropolitan area. She disappeared on Monday, September 14, near the Universidad Cuauhtémoc after reportedly getting into a motorcycle ride booked through a ride-hailing app.
Two days later, on September 16, her body was discovered showing signs of violence, sparking outrage and renewed calls for justice in a country where femicide — the killing of women because of their gender — remains a persistent crisis. Officials say more details will be released as the investigation progresses.
