Mexican security forces have arrested a man identified as José Luis “N,” known by the alias “Wicho,” who allegedly served as a financial and logistics operator for a criminal cell tied to the faction of the Sinaloa Cartel led by Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada. The arrest took place in the coastal city of Mazatlán, in the northwestern state of Sinaloa, and was carried out by elite units of Mexico’s National Guard working alongside the Army.
According to authorities, “Wicho” is wanted in the United States, specifically by federal prosecutors in the Central District of California, on charges connected to cocaine trafficking. US court records cited by Mexican media accuse him of possessing cocaine with intent to distribute it—an offense that could lead to his extradition to face trial north of the border.
The Sinaloa Cartel has long been one of Mexico’s most powerful organized crime groups, and the faction associated with “El Mayo” Zambada has faced intensified pressure from Mexican and US authorities in recent months. Zambada himself was taken into US custody in 2024 under controversial circumstances, triggering a wave of arrests targeting his network’s financial backers, logistics coordinators, and local commanders across Mexico.
Officials have not yet released further details about “Wicho’s” specific role within the organization or the scope of the financial operations he allegedly managed.
