Mexico City is gearing up for one of its biggest annual celebrations, as the historic Zócalo—the massive main square in the heart of the capital—transforms into the epicenter of Mexican Independence Day festivities. President Claudia Sheinbaum will preside over the ceremony from the balcony of the National Palace, delivering the iconic “Grito de Dolores,” a patriotic reenactment of the 1810 cry for independence from Spain that Mexican presidents perform every year on the eve of September 16.
The tradition dates back to Father Miguel Hidalgo’s original call to arms in the town of Dolores, which sparked Mexico’s war of independence. Today, the ritual has become a nationwide spectacle, with heads of state, governors, and mayors across the country echoing the historic cry before crowds gathered in town squares.
In the capital, thousands of residents and visitors are expected to pack the Zócalo—one of the largest public plazas in the world—for a night filled with live music performances, food, and patriotic fervor. The celebration typically culminates in fireworks and an outpouring of national pride as Mexicans commemorate more than two centuries of independence.
