In the heart of Bogotá, construction crews are putting the finishing touches on an unusual engineering feat: a massive elevated bridge that will carry trains for the city’s first metro line. The structure spans 215 meters (about 705 feet) across the intersection of Avenida Caracas and Calle 26, two of the busiest thoroughfares in the Colombian capital.

What makes this bridge stand out is its design. Unlike typical elevated viaducts, which rely on evenly spaced columns for support, this megabridge has no columns in its middle section. Engineers achieved the open span using construction techniques that avoided scaffolding and intermediate supports altogether—a method that also meant traffic below could keep flowing largely undisturbed throughout the build.

The bridge is one of the most visible pieces of Bogotá’s long-awaited Metro Line 1, a project meant to ease chronic traffic congestion in a city of more than 8 million people.
