Spanish violinist María Dueñas is coming back to Mexico, and this time she’s bringing weighty expectations with her. Four years after her first appearance at the Festival Internacional Cervantino (FIC) in the city of Guanajuato, the young musician will return to that stage — but not before making a stop at Mexico City’s Festival Cultura UNAM.
Dueñas made her FIC debut in 2022 at just 19 years old, already carrying serious credentials: she had recently signed with Deutsche Grammophon, the storied classical music label, whose president, Clemens Trautmann, described her talent as the kind that appears only once in a generation.
For her upcoming Mexico City performance, Dueñas will share the stage with the Camerata of Salzburg, the acclaimed Austrian chamber orchestra, in a program built around works by Mendelssohn, Beethoven, and Mozart.
Despite the mounting hype, Dueñas insists she isn’t chasing anyone else’s version of success. “Every time I walk on stage, I try not to fulfill some external idea of what I ‘should’ be,” she has said, “but to offer what I am in that moment: my preparation, my vulnerability, my love for music.”
