A small chihuahua is winning hearts after being officially welcomed into the ranks of Mexico’s National Guard, the federal security force created in 2019 to combat organized crime and support local police. The dog, now named Comando (Spanish for “Commando”), previously belonged to an elderly couple who could no longer care for him.
According to Lieutenant Débora Hernández, a National Guard officer, the couple was unable to continue looking after the chihuahua, so the unit stepped in and adopted him as part of their team. Since joining, Comando has become something of a mascot, often appearing alongside uniformed officers during patrols and public events.
Hernández explained that having the small dog around has an unexpected benefit: it helps build trust between the National Guard and everyday citizens. In a country where law enforcement can sometimes be viewed with suspicion or fear, a friendly, approachable animal like Comando seems to soften that image, making officers appear more relatable to the communities they serve.
The story has resonated widely on social media, with many users praising the National Guard for giving the elderly couple’s beloved pet a safe and loving new home rather than leaving him without care. Comando’s tale offers a lighthearted moment amid heavier news coming out of Mexico.
