Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro Head to Brazil Runoff

Brazil’s presidential race is headed for a second round. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the leftist leader who has governed Latin America’s largest economy, will face Senator Flávio Bolsonaro in a runoff vote scheduled for October 25.

Flávio Bolsonaro is the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, the right-wing populist who led Brazil before Lula’s current term. The senator has emerged as a standard-bearer for his father’s political movement, which remains a powerful force in Brazilian politics despite Jair Bolsonaro’s legal troubles following the 2022 election.

Under Brazil’s electoral rules, a candidate must win more than 50% of the valid votes to be declared president in the first round. Since neither Lula nor Bolsonaro reached that threshold, the two top finishers now advance to a head-to-head vote later this month.

The runoff sets up a high-stakes rematch of the ideological rivalry that has defined Brazilian politics in recent years, pitting Lula’s left-wing coalition against the conservative base mobilized by the Bolsonaro family name. The outcome will determine the direction of economic and social policy in a country of more than 200 million people for the next four years.
