For more than 35 years, Emmanuel del Real—better known as “Meme”—has been a fixture of Mexican rock, best recognized as one of the four founding members of Café Tacvba, one of Latin America’s most influential bands. But nearly a year ago, he decided to step outside that familiar collective identity and strike out on his own as a solo artist.
That leap resulted in his November 2023 album La montaña escondida (“The Hidden Mountain”), a project that pushed him far beyond the comfort zone he’d built over three decades with his bandmates. Without the safety net of a group, Del Real now carries full responsibility for every outcome of his musical journey—good or bad—a shift he says has been both liberating and unnerving.
In a candid new interview, the musician, singer and producer confesses that despite his decades of experience, he still gets nervous walking on stage without the rest of Café Tacvba beside him. He describes the process as an ongoing lesson in what it truly takes to make a personal project succeed, from songwriting to performance to simply trusting his own instincts.
