Mexico’s Anti-Corruption and Good Government Secretariat (SABG) has opened an investigation after discovering that someone is offering to sell 15 million passenger records from Aeromexico, the country’s flagship airline, on the messaging app Telegram.
According to reporting from Reforma, the listing surfaced on a channel within the app, a platform increasingly used by cybercriminals to trade stolen personal data because of its encrypted, semi-anonymous chats. The records reportedly include details on travelers who flew with the airline, though the exact scope of the information—such as names, contact details, or travel itineraries—has not been fully confirmed by authorities.
SABG’s involvement suggests officials are treating the case as a possible breach involving sensitive personal data, which could carry legal and financial consequences for Aeromexico if negligence in handling passenger information is confirmed. Data leaks of this kind can expose travelers to identity theft, phishing scams, and other forms of fraud, making the investigation a matter of public concern well beyond aviation circles.
Neither Aeromexico nor Mexican authorities have released further details on how the alleged leak occurred or how many people might be affected. The airline, one of the largest in Latin America, has not yet issued a public statement addressing the claims.
