Sheeran told the crowd he never set out to be a political figure, but felt he could no longer stay silent on what he called a humanitarian crisis. He described Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attacks as “horrific,” while calling the devastation in Gaza “catastrophic, unjustifiable and disproportionate.” He also voiced concern over what he termed “systemic injustice” in the West Bank.
The British pop star clarified that the choice to drop Macklemore came from his tour promoters, not himself, but admitted he’d made mistakes while navigating the crisis and apologized repeatedly. He said he’d questioned whether to continue touring at all, but chose to return for his fans, insisting his shows remain a space where people with opposing views can coexist.
Outside the Philadelphia venue, demonstrators waved Palestinian flags, though the concert went ahead without major disruption. Some fans have reportedly received ticket refunds, though neither Ticketmaster nor the tour’s promoter has confirmed this officially.
