A six-year-old girl in China is turning heads in the world of competitive puzzle-solving. Lian Yunzhi, from the city of Chengdu in southwestern China, has set a new women’s world record for solving the classic 3×3 Rubik’s Cube — not once, but twice in the same month.
Competing in official events sanctioned by the World Cube Association, the international body that oversees so-called “speedcubing” competitions, Lian first posted an average solve time of 4.52 seconds during a contest in Wuhan. She then broke her own record days later in Canton (Guangzhou), completing the puzzle in an average of just 4.27 seconds — a blur of hand movements that outpaces what most adults could manage even after years of practice.
Speedcubing has grown into a global phenomenon, with thousands of competitors racing to arrange the cube’s colored squares into matching faces on each side as quickly as possible. Official rankings are typically based on the average of several solves rather than a single fastest time, making consistency just as important as raw speed.
Chinese state broadcaster CCTV highlighted Lian’s achievement, noting her rare talent at such a young age. Her back-to-back records have made her one of the youngest standout names in the sport, drawing attention from cubing enthusiasts worldwide.
